EPOCH was created in 1996, through the merger of two of the Midwest's most successful TPAs, LaHood & Associates, Inc., in Overland Park, Kansas (founded 1977; acquired by Blue Cross/Blue Shield Kansas City in 1985) and Pension Associates, Inc. (PAI), located in St. Louis, Missouri (founded 1957; acquired by Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Missouri in 1990). In November 2005 EPOCH Kansas City and EPOCH St. Louis split into two separate organizations. EPOCH Kansas City became a wholly owned subsidiary of BCBSKC and EPOCH St. Louis became a wholly owned subsidiary of Wellpoint/Healthlink.

EPOCH Kansas City continues its current TPA services, as well as serves as a claim processing center for BCBSKC. Today, EPOCH serves over 90,000 lives and 200 employer groups, with revenues in excess of $24 million.
